While we look forward to the coming season, we are somewhat disappointed that
we are at present still in limbo re a permanent site for a "proper" Croquet
Club in Fowey. The negotiations which have been held between Dr Leach, for
the College, and Reg Wapling, Gwen Cussans and Rosemary Bradshaw, for the Club,
have now been completed for the time being. In a letter dated February 4th
Dr Leach reported that the matter of using the area adjacent to the Old Pavilion,
on the right hand side of the main entrance to the College, for Croquet, or
indeed other sites, was discussed at length at the College Governors meeting
on February 2nd. In the event they were unable to identify a suitable site
in the light of any potential development that may take place. They therefore
reluctantly concluded that the current provision of the area on the outfield
of the Cricket Pitch is, at this time, the best they can offer.
The Headmaster concludes to say that he realises that this will be a great disappointment to us but the College will be happy to reconsider the proposal, at the planning state, should development take place on the campus in the future. He apologises on behalf of the Governors for any disappointment that this decision may cause.
During these negotiations we approached the Croquet Association, our parent body, and are confident that if the College had been able to offer us a permanent site for a Croquet Lawn substantial grant aid would have been available. The Croquet Association's Development Officer, Patricia Duke-Cox, has expressed a strong interest in promoting Croquet in Cornwall, particularly on a site within an educational establishment.
This leaves the Club with the need to decide where to play during 2005, the Committee have decided that a vote on this issue should be taken at our AGM to be held on MONDAY MARCH 14th at 1.30pm in the PAVILION AT FOWEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Briefly, the decision will be between playing as in 2004 on the outfield of the cricket pitch, with use of the pavilion for storage and social activities or playing on the tea garden lawn at the Fowey Hotel.
On a lighter note, Sylvia Anson and Janet Howard are preparing another exciting Social Programme, so roll on those lovely Cornish Summer Afternoons and Evenings during which we enjoy our Croquet with, perhaps, a delicious Home Made Tea or Supper and a Glass of Wine.
