CORNWALL CROQUET CLUB - JULY TOURNAMENT

The Club held its second tournament of the year on Malcolm and Moira Hooper’s lawn at Budock Vean. It appears that the sun shines on both the “righteous” and on croquet players, for the weather showed Cornwall at its best, providing one of the most glorious days of the year so far. The fine dry weather resulted in the lawn playing fast, making for better croquet.

This tournament was designed to encourage novice members of the Club and expand membership. Without its own lawns the Club finds it hard to maintain the membership level necessary to develop a club site utilising the potential grants available. To this end the handicap system was adjusted slightly to favour the entry of newer players.

Ten members or guests participated in the knockout tournament with others providing encouragement and learning the intricacies of the game from the sidelines. The players represented a good cross section of the population, as croquet is one game in which men and women, old and young all compete on an even footing. At midday a barbecue was enjoyed whilst members watched an impressive demonstration of croquet skills by Tony Treglown (4.5) and Tony Backhouse (8).

Games in the tournament were limited to one and a half hours and after four rounds ANDY POPE (18) emerged the winner beating PAUL SCHOFIELD (20) 13 to 9 on time in the final. This was an excellent match, Andy taking the lead with an impressive 6 hoop break but PAUL reserving his two handicap shots (bisques) to make a valiant effort to obtain the lead late in the game. Andy runs the Penmere Manor Hotel in Falmouth with its own croquet lawn. This was ANDY's first tournament and resulted in his handicap being reduced from 18 to 14.

The day was enjoyed by players and spectators alike and the Cornwall Croquet Club hopes that it has helped to generate more interest in this fascinating game.

The Club thanks Malcolm and Moira for their generous hospitality.
