Cornwall Croquet Club’s South West Federation 'B' League team fought another close match on Saturday. Our first home match of the season saw visitors Sidmouth take a 3-0 lunchtime lead in the best of seven match.
Cornwall’s team of four included three debutants – Elizabeth Schofield (22), Paul Schofield (16) and Peter Cutting (16) – and it was in the afternoon that the team began to overcome their first match nerves.
First to put a point on the board was Peter, who won a tight match by just one point.
Elizabeth followed up with another single point victory.
Rosemary Bradshaw (22), the Club’s Publicity Secretary, won 9-5 against Sidmouth’s captain, David Temple (16).
The score was now 3-all and the final match had been level for a long time!
Sidmouth B League organiser Graeme Pryor (16) edged ahead in the final few minutes of the game but Paul fought back to draw level again. The match went to the final Wharrad turn and Graham made the decisive break and scored two more hoops. Leaving Paul widely separated, he was able to win the game and match for Sidmouth.
