Sat-Sun Aug 27-28, 2005 - New Members Weekend

(& Final Thu Sep 1, 2005)

Twelve of Cornwall Croquet Club’s newest recruits, some with only two coaching lessons behind them, converged on the Club’s Porthpean lawns for the Inaugural New Members’ Weekend tournament.

Part of the Club’s Recruitment and Retention programme, the event provided the players with an opportunity for their first competitive matches. Both versions of croquet, Golf Croquet and Association Croquet, were played and players were assisted by their Buddies – experienced Club members.

Most players played four matches, most often three games of Golf Croquet and one of Association Croquet, the latter lasting up to three hours.

Members taking part were Lynda Everett, Pam George, Frances Hindley, Margaret Lewis, Penny Rowe, Jacquie Webber, Jennifer Whetter, Ron George, Colin Hadley, Paul Lewis, Howard Rosevear and Michael Whetter.

Amongst the notable successes were Colin Hadley’s pegging out in his Association Croquet match against Jacquie Webber.

Two players – Ron George from St Agnes and Michael Whetter from St Austell – ended the weekend with a maximum four wins from four matches.

Ron & Maichael then engaged in a final, playing the best of three Golf Croquet matches.

It was a tight affair, with Michael edging the first game 4-2. Ron was not to be outshone, however, and came back strongly to win the second game, which went to the seventh and deciding hoop.

As the tension built, both players were less inclined to take risks and the third and deciding game was the longest. Ron took an early lead and managed to stretch to 3-0. A comeback by Michael was then all too short and Ron took the game 4-1 and won his very first competitive trophy.

The prize was presented by Club Chairman Tony Backhouse, who commended all twelve newcomers for taking the plunge into the competition arena.
