Cornwall Croquet Club played its second Federation League match of the season at Sidmouth on Thursday 22nd May. Having lost the first match of the year, it was important to get a good result at the beautifully situated seaside courts. The weather was not at its best.
The morning matches left the tie all square. Cornwall's Nigel Grant won his singles match against David Clarke, from Sidmouth. Both players played off a handicap mark of 8 and Nigel came home by 11 points. Cornwall's captain, Tony Backhouse, playing off 7 handicap and Malcolm Hooper, off 10, lost the morning doubles against Sidmouth's Sue Rogers and Richard Mills (both handicap 7).
Captain Tony scored the first afternoon point for Cornwall, winning a tight game by 3 points from Richard Mills. Malcolm Hooper followed Tony home with his first singles win of the year, a convincing 9 point margin. With the tie in the bag, the sun finally out and the nearby waves gently lapping against the shoreline, Nigel Grant brought home his match against old adversary Sue Rogers by 5 points. An afternoon whitewash, with all three Cornwall players winning at the peg.
