On Tuesday May 11th Cornwall Croquet Club's Porthpean Golf Croquet Team were hosts to Barnstaple in a match in the Southwest Federation Golf Croquet League competition.
Porthpean fielded a team of 7 players: Joyce Wilson, team captain, Tony Jennings, Russell Moore, Berle Moore, Katherine Smith, Trevor Bainbridge and Maggie Dawson.
Barnstaple had 6 players in the morning and 5 in the afternoon: David White team captain, Syd Jones, Ann White, Gordon Cummings, Irene Fane and Michael Fane.
The day began in grey overcast conditions with eight 45 minute singles games being played in the morning. These were all hard fought battles ending in a draw (4 games all) at lunchtime with both teams having everything to play for.
After lunch a further 4 singles were played in worsening conditions as hail storms lashed across the lawns. Porthpean were one point ahead at the end of the singles and they managed to retain this lead through the following 4 doubles.
The day culminating in an exciting nip and tuck doubles game which went to a Golden Hoop to decide the winner.
The day ended with everyone dashing for the club house where a traditional tea of scones and Cornish cream was enjoyed by all.
