May 28th saw Cornwall Croquet Club play its first SWF Intermediate League match of the season, entertaining Plymouth at Porthpean. Playing for Cornwall were Tony Jennings (handicap 12), Stephen Read (14), and Paul Schofield (14). Plymouth’s players were Brian Stephens (12), Peter Gates (18), and Marjorie Barker (18).
A singles and a doubles game were played in the morning. Read had a comfortable win against Barker, 21-9. In the doubles, D. Edwards (10) substituted for Schofield, who had been held up by a traffic accident. This game was very close throughout, with time running out, and the final turns being played, scores were level. Cornwall were in a strong position to make the deciding hoop, with both their opponents at distance. However, Stephens hit in superbly, which enabled Plymouth to take the game 16-15.
In the afternoon, Jennings, in fine form, beat Barker 26-11, the only peg-out of the day. Read had a close tussle with Stephens, who finally got the upper hand to win 19-17. Ironically, Cornwall scored 96 hoop points to Plymouth’s 68, but lost the match 2-3.
The match was refereed by Tony Backhouse.
