Tuesday June 22nd saw Cornwall entertain Exeter for Cornwall’s third Intermediate league match of the season on a perfect summer day. The lawns were fast, making it tricky to judge the strength of shot.
Teams were: Cornwall – Tony Jennings (handicap 12), Stephen Read (14), Peter Dexter (16) and Des Honey (18). Exeter - Roger Thorn (10), Richard Hichens (10), Scylla Blackwell (16), and David Johns (18).
The first game to finish was the morning doubles, Jennings & Honey against Hichens & Blackwell. With both Cornwall players in fine form, and Exeter struggling, a 19-4 win for Cornwall resulted. Soon afterwards, the double-banked singles both produced comprehensive wins for Read, 20-5 against Johns, and for Dexter, playing in his first Intermediate league match, 18-6 against Thorn.
So with a 3-0 lead at lunch, Cornwall needed only one win in the afternoon singles to clinch the match.
Dexter continued in excellent form to beat Hichens by the wide margin of 22-5. Read and Honey had rather closer matches against Blackwell & Johns respectively, winning 21-13 and 13-7. Jennings had a hard-fought game against Exeter captain Thorn, who managed a 16-14 win.
Cornwall having lost their two previous games by narrow margins, were therefore well pleased to obtain a 6-1 win.
Final Score: Cornwall 6 Exeter 1
