A record entry of 14 pairs played in the Cornwall Croquet Club Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles Tournament on Sat & Sun 17-18 Jul 2010. Playing in two blocks of seven, each pair played six 19 point games over the two days. Each game lasted a maximum of an hour, unless one pair scored ten hoops before that time.
Games were very competitive, but played in a good spirit throughout, with a wide range of experience partially compensated for by extra turns given under the handicapping system.
By the end of the first day, there were still several teams in contention in both blocks, with no obvious winners evident.
The weather on the Sunday continued to be fine and some pairs started to pull away from the pack, as others fell by the wayside. The winners of both blocks were not decided until the final games, when Margaret & Stephen Read, and Elizabeth & Paul Schofield emerged to fight the final. Both pairs were unbeaten in the blocks; although the Reads drew two games.
The final was a close-fought game, with the lead changing several times. When time was called, the Reads were just one hoop ahead, with the four extension turns per team to play. The Schofields had a chance to square the match, and to go on for a Golden Hoop, but the Reads managed to run the 14th hoop with their last ball and to win the final by eight hoops to six.
The winners’ trophy was presented by the club chairman, Ron George, who organised, managed and refereed the event. He thanked those who had cut the grass, and set out the lawns on both days, and to all who had made the weekend so enjoyable and successful.
