A record number of 21 members entered for the Cornwall Croquet Club's annual Golf-Singles Tournament; too many for a normal two-block competition.
Instead, members were given eight games, selected at random from the entrants, to play over the two days. Each game was timed at 45 minutes maximum or the best of 13 hoops, played on full-size lawns.
By the end of the first day, played in glorious sunshine, there were just two players unbeaten, but there were several others in contention, with just one loss.
Sunday was set for a good contest, but the weather had other ideas.
A heavy shower of rain caused puddles to form on both lawns and the start of play was delayed for one and a half hours. Even then, lawn 1 was not fit to play on, so the first four games were played on half courts on Lawn 2, by which time both lawns could be made full size. It was decided, by the tournament Manager, Ron George, that play would be restricted to 7 games per member.
Whilst this was being sorted out, play went on, in very grey, but dry, conditions, and both Maggie Dawson and Elizabeth Schofield continued their winning ways from the previous day. But there were still contenders for the semi final places, and the possibilities increased when Elizabeth lost one of her games.
When the final reckoning came, Maggie Dawson was still unbeaten, with 7 points, and Kathleen Moorshead and Elizabeth Schofield each had 6 points. However, Kathleen had scored 2 more hoops than Elizabeth.
The fourth place in the semi final had to be decided by David Edwards and Russell Moore placing one of two balls nearest to the middle peg; a contest won by David.
The two semis were won by David, who beat Kathleen by 6/4, and Elizabeth, who beat Maggie by 7/3.
The final will be played during Finals Weekend on Saturday 25th September. Click here for the report.
