The opening match of the season, between Cornwall Croquet Club’s two league teams, was played in perfect conditions on April 26th. Both sides fielded full teams of eight players. Twenty games are played, four of these being doubles. The first games off were two of the doubles, honours ending even. The morning singles gave Cornwall a lunchtime advantage of 4 wins to 2, with no less than 4 games drawn, two being very defensive, each with only 4 hoops scored in 45 minutes play.
Lunch must have done Cornwall some good, as the afternoon play produced only one win for Porthpean, with another two games drawn. This gave a final winning margin for Cornwall of 14-6. However, the general feeling was that this rather flattered Cornwall, and the match overall was much tighter than the score suggested. For example, Russell Moore lost three games by one point on the last deciding hoops, and if Porthpean had clinched a few of the draws, several of which really hung in the balance, it might well have been a different story.
The match was organized by Joyce Wilson for Porthpean, and Margaret Read & Barry Edwards for Cornwall. Ron George refereed. Teams were: Cornwall: S. Read, D.Edwards, M.Read, P.George, P.Dexter, P.Schofield, E.Schofield, & J.Burrows; Cornwall Porthpean: A.Jennings, R.Moore, B.Moore, A.Le Fevre, K.Moorshead, K.Smith, T.Bainbridge, & J.Perry.
Final Score: Cornwall 16 - Cornwall Porthpean 14
