Cornwall Croquet Club welcomed Plymouth CC for the first of this season’s Federation League matches. Playing for Cornwall were Peter Cutting, handicap 12, Tony Jennings (14), and David Edwards (10). Plymouth were represented by Alan Scheffert (8), Bob Savage (9), and Brian Stevens (14). Conditions were not too easy, with enough wind to cause problems, but it did stay dry.
The morning singles saw Jennings, with 6 bisques(extra turns), play Scheffert, who led for almost the whole game, but Jennings produced a final charge which saw him win by one hoop. Edwards & Cutting played Savage & Stevens. For most of the game, the outcome could have gone either way, but Cutting finished with an excellent break, pegging out to give Cornwall a 26-14 win. So 2:0 to Cornwall at lunch – only needing one of the afternoon singles to win the match.
However, Plymouth saw it as only needing to win all three games, and with all of their players in better form than they had shown in the morning, they duly did so. Cutting lost the closest game -6 to Savage, Edwards was no match for Scheffert, losing -10, and Jennings failed to keep up his morning form, going down – 12 to Stevens.
Final Score: Cornwall 2 Plymouth 3
