Two Cornish teams travelled to Nailsea for the annual South-West Federation Short Association Croquet Tournament at the weekend and found they were drawn against each other in the first round of Division 1.
The Fowey Club team (Margaret & Stephen Read, Rosemary Bradshaw & Tony Jennings) are also members of the opposing Cornwall Croquet Club at Porthpean and both sides were keen to get an early lead, but had to be content with a 2-all result.
With honours even and each with three more rounds to play against Nailsea, Trendlewood and Kingston Langley, it was Fowey who then forged ahead. Before the crucial final match they were lying second to the leaders, Trendlewood, with a possibility of a tie for first place in sight if they could win the last four games.
However, by winning their final match 4 – 0, the Cornwall team (David Edwards, Des Honey, Colin Hadley & Ron George) staged a come-back, overtaking their Fowey rivals and finishing one point ahead of them in joint second place.
