Tue 31 Jul 2012 - SWF Golf Croquet League                    (Played at Exeter CC)

Exeter v Cornwall Rosevear

Tue July 31st saw Cornwall’s Rosevear team visit Exeter for the last of this season’s fixtures, which had been postponed at Exeter’s request in the early “monsoon” season. The forecast was not brilliant, but after a bit of drizzle over the moors, the day was dry and quite warm. Exeter’s two courts, about three-quarter size, are maintained by the Council and were in excellent condition & a pleasure to play on.

Cornwall’s team were: Stephen Read, (handicap 3), David Edwards (3), Margaret Read (8), Maggi Dawson (8), Jenny Burrows (9), Dorianne Forsdick (9), and Barry Edwards (10). Exeter was represented by Roger Thorne (Capt) (7), Richard Hichens (8), Joy Nield (10), Anne Steward (10), Stephen Lawson (12), Sylvia Perry (10), and Sheila Austin (12).

This season is Exeter’s first foray into the South West Federation Golf Croquet League competition, and it was evident that although Rosevear have themselves not had a very successful year, their greater experience was a considerable advantage. However, Exeter’s captain, Roger Thorne, is a good Association player, and with a handicap of 7, his accuracy was too much for Edwards in their singles game against him, losing by generous margin, Likewise Richard Hitchens is an accomplished Association player playing off a Golf handicap of 8 proved too strong for Read. Elsewhere, Cornwall progressed steadily, and before the final games were played, had an unbeatable lead.

Final Score:  Exeter 5.5     Cornwall 14.5
