Tuesday April 28th saw the first of the season’s matches in the South West Federation golf croquet handicap league. This is required to be between Cornwall’s two teams in this league, and each fielded full teams of eight players. The weather was fortunately dry, but the low temperatures and biting wind made most players seem to be dressed for Arctic warfare, and be almost unrecognisable at a greater distance than about 10 yards. The lawns, cut the previous day, were moderately paced. Handicaps ranged from 2 to 11.
The match started with two doubles, and encouraged Porthpean who won both of them. After that, no side was able to obtain a decisive advantage, and throughout the day, there was seldom more than a point between them. The match entered the final doubles with Rosevear leading by the narrow margin of 9.5 to 8.5. Porthpean needed to win both doubles to square the match, Porthpean got one win, but Rosevear held on to win the other, to end what had been a very close and enjoyable match. Both teams then retired to the comparative warmth of the Clubhouse for tea. Team captains expressed their thanks to Des Honey, who refereed the match.
Final Score: Rosevear 10.5, Porthpean 9.5
