Tue 9 Jun 2015 - SWF Golf Croquet Level Play League                    (Played at Exeter CC)

Exeter v Cornwall

June 9th saw Cornwall’s level play team visit Exeter, looking for their first win of the season. Conditions were bright but breezy, and Exeter’s lawns, not full sized, were fast, causing problems at first for most of the visitors, whose home lawns are noticeably slower.

The match started with two doubles games, honours of which were shared, both games being won by comfortable margins.

Four singles followed, double banked, these also ending up evenly matched. The next set of singles were also shared two-all.

However, in the later games, Cornwall gained a decisive advantage, winning five of the six, these including the second pair of doubles. This left Exeter needing to win all four in the last set, but this proved beyond them, Cornwall in fact winning three games in the final set of singles.

Exeter’s outstanding player was Adam Wimshurst, who was unbeaten in his singles games, but lost one of his doubles by one hoop.

For Cornwall, Rhona Foster managed a 7-0 win, and shared a doubles win. Kathryn Smith won two singles, and also shared a doubles win.

Teams were: Exeter: Adam Wimshurst - Captain (3), Scylla Blackwell (6), John Patterson (7), Richard Hichens (7), Sandra Patterson (7).
Cornwall: David Edwards - Captain (3), Stephen Read (3), Kathryn Smith (6), Rhona Foster (6), Ron George (5), Peter Dexter (4).

Final Score: Exeter 7      Cornwall 13
