Cornwall entertained a very strong team from Budleigh. Conditions were good, the lawns played well, and as a bonus, there was, unusually, very little wind.
Play started with the four doubles, played single banked. In the first matches, Cornwall managed one win, but the others went to Budleigh by large margins. It soon became evident that the generally lower handicaps of the Budleigh players were an accurate reflection of their skills.
The first two sets of double-banked singles each produced one win for Cornwall. The home team did a little better in the last two sets of singles, gleaning three wins and a draw.
The teams were: Cornwall: David Edwards (3), Stephen Read (3), Rhona Foster (5), Kathryn Smith (5), Tony Backhouse (5), Ron George (5), Peter Dexter (4), Des Honey (4).
Budleigh Salterton: Rob Weeks (1), Alan Rush (2), Peter Mallen (3), David Hicks (3), Chris Donovan (2), Roger Mills (4).
Final Score: Cornwall 6.5 Budleigh Salterton 13.5
