Fourteen players set off in the mist on Saturday at the start of the Cornwall Croquet Club’s Golf Croquet Handicap Singles Tournament. As the mist lifted and the sun came out, the lawns got much faster and tested the accuracy of both short and long strokes played.
The tournament was organised in two blocks, seeded to improve the quality of games for everybody, and by the end of Saturday none of the players had established a commanding lead in either block; promising an interesting competition for the next day.
Sunday was cloudy but the lawns were in fast condition from the start, giving everyone an equal chance of progressing to the final. When the last game in each block was started, scores were so close that the results in each game would determine which of three players would contest the final. Eventually John Perry and Des Honey emerged as block winners.
In spite of having to concede seven extra turns, Des got an early lead of three, but John pulled back to within one hoop by the seventh. However, when time was called, Des had increased his lead to six hoops to four to win the event.
Before presenting the trophy to Des, the club President, Howard Rosevear, congratulated all on the standard of play and the spirit in which the tournament had been played.
He thanked Ron George for again organising, managing and refereeing proceedings.
