Cornwall successfully held its position in the top division of this competition, held over the weekend of April 13th & 14th at Nailsea.
Cornwall was fortunate in playing on the Sunday, as the Saturday had been a miserable day with persistent rain, enough to saturate the courts and leave patches of standing water. Drier conditions on the Sunday allowed the lawns to dry out to some extent, and although still very damp, they were surprisingly fast.
Cornwall started with a disastrous first round against the eventual group winners Nailsea, going down 0-4. Things improved in the second match, with 3 wins, and the last two matches were halved 2-all.
The group 1 clear winners were Nailsea, followed by Fowey in second position with 8 wins, Cornwall and Trendlewood (Nailsea) with 7, and Bath, relegated to division 2, with 6.
Cornwall's team were: Tony Backhouse (handicap 7), David Edwards (9), Des Honey (11), and Dorianne Forsdick (24). Dorianne played extremely well, gaining three wins, and probably ensuring that her handicap will be reduced to 20.
This tournament has gained steadily in popularity, with 19 teams from the South West Federation competing in this year's event.
