In generally vile conditions – wet, cold, and increasingly windy, Cornwall's Rosevear Golf Croquet team played its second league fixture of the season, at home to Budleigh Salterton on May 12th.
Budleigh fielded two low handicap players, Rob Weeks (capt) on 2, and Alan Rush on 3. Kay Scales played off 4, and the rest of their team of eight played off middle handicap levels of between 7 & 9. This did some favours for Rosevear, as even Budleigh's less experienced players mostly played off 7, comparable Rosevear players tending to be a couple of numbers higher, and getting the advantage of free turns. At least one player from each team was playing in their first league match.
Cornwall's lowest handicap was David Edwards on 2, but he was well beaten in his opening match against Rush, going down 2-7. He did better against Weeks, but still lost 5-7. However, the other members of the team were getting good wins, and slowly establishing a useful lead against Budleigh, who however fought back to win the last two doubles to bring their score up to 8.5 points, but with 20 points at stake, this left Rosevear the winners by 11.5 to 8.5.
Players were:
Budleigh: Rob. Weeks (2), Alan Rush (3), Kay Scales (4), Martin Luce, Linda Hicks, Ivor Meredith (all 7), David Hicks (8), and Pat Meredith (9).
Rosevear: David. Edwards (2), Paul. Schofield (5), Elizabeth Schofield (7), Pam George, Maggie Dawson & Jenny Burrows (all 9), Tanis Boxall (10) & Liz Honey (10).
Final Score: Cornwall Rosevear 11.5 Budleigh Salterton 8.5
