The Club tournament for less experienced Association Croquet players – "High Bisquers" with handicaps between 20 and 24 – was played over the weekend of June 22nd & 23rd.
What had looked likely to be a record entry was finally whittled down to six players, as some intended entrants had to back out.
Conditions varied from difficult, with strong, gusty and cold winds on both days, to downright unpleasant during periods of rain on the Saturday. This led to some games ending with low hoop scores at the end of their two-hour duration, but competition for the handsome & unusual trophy was very tight among the front runners. In the end, three players finished with four wins, leading to a difficult situation to resolve. After discussion with the Trophy donors, Margaret & Stephen Read, it was agreed that the winner would be decided by a shoot-out at the peg from the boundary. Dorianne Forsdick set the pace with a hit in her first shot, the ball swinging in gracefully in a downwind curve onto the peg! The two other contestants for the trophy, Ron George and Jenny Burrows, played shots which were tantalizingly close to the peg, but not quite good enough.
The trophy was presented to Dorianne by Margaret Read in the welcome shelter of the Clubhouse.
Results: with 4 wins, and peg hit, overall winner – Dorianne Forsdick.
4 wins – Jenny Burrows.
4 wins - Ron George.
2 wins – Margaret Read.
1 win - Rhona Foster.
0 wins – Pam George
Thanks go to Colin Hadley, Tournament Secretary, for organizing the competition.
