Cornwall’s Federation Association Croquet league match was played at Sidmouth on June 24th.
The Teams of four were:
Cornwall – Richard Griffiths (Capt, handicap -1), Ian Wilson (6), David Edwards (6), and Des Honey (8).
Sidmouth – Colin Walls (7), Peter Hills (10), Mike Taylor (4.5), and Nancy Temple (11).
This meant that in most games, Sidmouth received bisques.
Sidmouth’s lawns are usually short cut and fast. After the protracted spell of hot dry weather, they were even faster than usual, and there was a tendency for balls to turn as they slowed down. This made hoop approaches tricky, and running off the lawn in croquet strokes was a risk which even occasionally caught out the home players.
The play started with the doubles and two double-banked singles. In the doubles, Walls & Temple, with 2 bisques, won +4 against Wilson & Honey. Griffiths was faced with 11 bisques playing Hills, and this proved too much, Hills winning +14. Edwards, with 1.5 bisques, lost -1 to Taylor, getting nearer to the feel of the lawn too late in the game.
In the afternoon, the remaining four singles were played, Griffiths this time winning against Temple +3. Edwards had another close game against Hills, losing -1 & repeating his 18-19 morning score. Walls beat Honey +5, and Taylor had a comfortable win against Wilson +15.
Final Score:Sidmouth 6, Cornwall 1
