A Cornwall croquet team of three travelled to Sidmouth to play in an Intermediate League Association match.
In the morning matches Peter Dexter and Ron George, both 16 handicap, took on Philip Harris (9) and Barbara Clarke (18) in a doubles game that had a few spectacular shots, on a very fast lawn, and ended in a win for Cornwall by 14 to 12.
Meanwhile, the singles match between Rosemary Bradshaw (11) and Julie Horsley (14) progressed to time, when the score was 15 to each player. After some 20 minutes of cat and mouse play to find a winner, Julie ended up stuck in 3-Back with Rosemary poised with her two balls within a few feet of her required hoop. Her approach shot was good and she had only to run the hoop from a couple of feet out to win the game. But! She also got stuck part way through, leaving Julie a simple tap shot to win the game for Sidmouth, and to square the match at lunchtime.
In the afternoon, the three singles games were all well contested by both sides. Rosemary had another close game, which could have gone either way, but lost by one hoop again. Peter was also unsuccessful against Barbara, losing by 11-13. In the other game Julie and Ron had all their balls on the same hoop – one each on hoop 2 and one each on 1-Back. For half an hour they tried to break the deadlock. Eventually, with her final turn, as the time ran out, she managed to run through hoop 2 and completed her break with two further hoops to finish the game as winner at 10-7.
This meant that Cornwall had lost all three afternoon games and the match went to Sidmouth by 4 games to 1.
Final Score: Sidmouth 4 Cornwall 1
