Cornwall Croquet sent a team to the annual SWF Short Croquet Tournament.
Normally played at Nailsea but since their courts were out of action, it was held at Camertown & Peasdown CC, near to Bath. After leaving St Austell at 6:45, Des’s sat-nav took us up the M5 and then on an interesting route through the Cheddar Gorge to arrive by 10:00.
The club is a 4 court venue in a picturesque location on the edge of the Mendips. The lawns were in a similar condition to our own, following the considerable rain over the last few months.
Our team of 4 players each played 4 games, with Bob B. 4 wins, Dorianne 3 wins, Peter C. 1 win and Des maintaining his current poor form and losing all his games. This gave us 8 wins from 16 games and 3rd out of 5 teams in Division 1.
So we retained our place in the Division, which was won by Nailsea Trendlewood.
Sidmouth Fortfield were relegated to Division 2.
We left around 6pm and returned home along an alternative route through Wells and Glastonbury. It was a very weary team that reached home by 9:30pm, after a round trip of 300 miles, 6½ hours travelling and 5 hours of croquet.
But, we will probably silly enough to do it all again next year. At least the Autumn tournament will be at Budleigh!
