Friday 25 May saw the opening match for Porthpean and Rosevear, Cornwall Croquet Club's two golf croquet teams, when they played one another. Both teams fielded a full team of eight players and Ron George kindly acted as referee.

The day commenced with four doubles games, three of which were won by Rosevear when Tanis Boxall and Liz Honey beat Felicity Owen and Keith Wakeford 6-3, Fiona Russell and Pam George triumphed over Kathryn Smith and Janet Bell 6-5 and Bob Cash with Cathy McCommant won against Russell Moore and Howard Rosevear 7-4.

Porthpean's only doubles win was achieved by Linda Lang and Kathleen Moorshead when they triumphed 5-3 over Rhona Foster and Rob Adams, the latter making his South West Federation League debut and going on to win 7-5 in a singles game against Keith.

Continuing with the singles games, for Porthpean Janet enjoyed 7-4 successes over both Tanis and Rob whilst Howard achieved the same in his games with Pam and Cathy. Porthpean's Russell secured a 7-5 victory against Bob before following this up with a 7-6 win over Rhona. Rosevear's Liz also prevailed twice over opponents, firstly by winning 7-5 against Keith and secondly with a 7-4 defeat of Felicity.

Other successes were gained by Rosevear when Fiona overcame Kathryn 7-4, the same score by which Tanis beat Felicity and Bob won against Kathleen. Also for Rosevear, Pam surpassed Linda 7-5.

For Porthpean a 7-6 outcome was achieved by Linda when she met Cathy, and Kathleen secured a 7-3 win over Fiona.

The only draw of the day was in the form of a 6-6 tie between Kathryn and Rhona.

Friendly rivalry prevailed throughout a day which was blessed with sunny conditions and which endured only a brief spell of light rain.

A sumptuous tea was enjoyed after the close of play when the final score of 9 1/2 to Porthpean and 10 1/2 to Rosevear was announced.
