Cornwall Porthpean v Barnstaple

Final Score:  Cornwall Porthpean 13.5      Barnstaple 6.5

13 July saw Cornwall Croquet Club's Porthpean golf croquet team host Barnstaple. Both teams fielded a full team of eight players and handicaps ranged from 4 - 11. Continuous recent hot and dry weather made the lawns extremely difficult to judge at times.

The day started with a doubles game on both lawns. Janet Bell and Trevor Bainbridge met Anne Young and Irene Fane and drew 6-6. This result was replicated when Howard Rosevear and Keith Wakeford were paired against Simon Gibbon and Keith Abraham. The third draw in the doubles games was awarded to Linda Lang and Felicity Owen when they and their opponents, Roger Beels and Mella Wright, each ran three hoops. The only doubles game with a clear winning side went in Barnstaple's favour.

With the doubles games out of the way the day progressed with double banked singles games in which Porthpean enjoyed much success. Many Porthpean players secured wins in both their singles games. Keith had a decisive 7-0 victory over Anne but was forced to play on to 7-5 in order to win over Irene. Convincing wins were achieved by Trevor when a 7-3 defeat of Roger was followed with a 7-4 win over Keith. Linda was also awarded two victories, firstly when she overcame Keith 4-2 and secondly by securing a 7-4 win against Roger. No extra turns were exchanged in either of Linda's or Trevor's games as handicaps were equal. Also securing a couple of wins for Porthpean was Kathleen Moorshead when she beat Ray Young 5-3 and Simon 7-4. Felicity triumphed 7-4 against Mella but was held to a 4-4 draw when later paired against Anne. Janet attained a 7-4 win over Mike Wright and Kathryn Smith enjoyed a 6-4 success in her game against Simon. Howard and Mike's encounter finished in a 5-5 draw.

After the match concluded a sumptuous tea was enjoyed outside the pavilion and the final score of Porthpean 13 1/2 to Barnstaple's 6 1/2 was announced.
