Cornwall Porthpean v Budleigh Salterton South West

Final Score:  Cornwall Porthpean 10 1/2    Budleigh Salterton SW 9 1/2

On 24th July Cornwall's Porthpean GC team welcomed Budleigh Salterton's GC team to Cornwall Croquet Club.

The day commenced with the Double's Games. Budleigh scored 2 points and Porthpean equalized with 2 points.

The days play continued in much the same way with one team returning a point and the other equalizing!

Francis Browne, playing for just the second time for Porthpean won his games decisively 7/3 and 7/3. Keith Wakeford won his games against Margaret Brett 7/2, and 7/5 against Clive Sawers. Trevor Bainbridge secured wins of 7/4 against Budleigh's Captain, Bridget Andrews and 7/4 against Martin Hebdige. Kathleen Moorshead won her game 4/3 against Linda Hicks, and, Linda Lang won her game 7/4 against Anne Gedge.

At the end of the day the scores remained close and it was down to the game between Kathleen and Clive.

Everyone gathered around Lawn one and watched the game unfold. Again, it was a closely fought game with each hoop taking a considerable amount of time to be run. The score was 6 hoops to Clive and 5 to Kathleen . They made their way to hoop 12. The timer went. It was Kathleen's last chance to run the hoop. She was quite a distance from the hoop, but decided it was her only course of action. Result! Kathleen claimed hoop 12 and the result was now 6/6. This gained her the half point Porthpean needed to take the match.

After much applause everyone adjourned to the Clubhouse for a well deserved tea!
